End of materalism?

I am starting to wonder if we are entering an era where and when material processions are no longer important or certainly not as important as they were say 10 and 20 years ago? I would argue that instead, social networking and other  technologies has meant my social status is now measured by the quality and content of our blogs or facebook pages rather than what car we drive or the job we do.

Therefore the person we are has become more important than what we own and how much it costed, maybe because we can provide everyone and anyone with more immediate information about who we are. I know for myself, I have abandoned by plans for big material things for a relevantly modest living where my contribution to society is what I am judged upon.

The economy is changing big time right now and I see we are certainly seeing the start of the end for materialism as the way we value ourselves and others.
