As a disability activists, I have always seen the goal to be ensure the full inclusion of disabled people into society as full and equal citizens whether it be education, employment, leisure or prisons. It is about accessibility, attitudes and a commitment to achieving equality.
I believe what the welfare reforms has highlighted is that inclusion is not really the agenda of many disabled campaigners but instead it is about keeping the level of exclusion they currently have as they fight to remain dependent on benefits.
We can see this with the Remploy factors, which is a form of institutionalised segregation which has no place in 21st Century society. I therefore find it both sad and frustrating that campaigners, traders and MPs are fighting to keep these factories open as it showns a negative attitude to the inclusion of disabled people.
We must keep focused on inclusion in all its forms, it is that pure and simple.
