‘Promoting independence’ is one of those terms which has sadly been flocked to death as it was been hijacked by so many people for so many reasons, it is very hard to know what it really means nowadays. Independence could mean using the medical model, physically doing everything for ourselves, which is technically impossible as we live in an interdependent society. It could mean using the social, having choice and control over our lives which is okay but is it really possible? and it is indeed enough?
I am not sure we should be talking about independence and whether the focus should now be on meaningful inclusion on an assumption a reasonable degree of choice and control from responsibility is included in that? Promoting independence is a concept we can improve upon for the next generation of disabled people.
