A lot of ‘cutting edge’ social workers types, as well as disability charities, talk about having a ‘fair society’ but I am really sure that is not what I want. For me, fairness is about accepting disabled people are inferior beings and then fairly compensating them in lieu of being properly included in society by throwing them dog-food quality benefits and support to make their families and ‘carers’ feel better. Fairness is often dictated by middle class families who idea of fairness is actually very unfair to people like me, who will be regarded as unemployable and slightly better off dead.
I want instead an empowered society, where everyone is able to reach their full potential and be included in society as full active contributing citizens. To achieve this, we need to expose fairness and the prejudices behind it for what it is so we can demand more.
